About Us - Peter Tyrie
The Eton Collection’s five-strong collection of luxury boutique and town house hotels in the United Kingdom, as well as an award winning restaurant and bar in the City of London and a tapas bar in Little Venice was started in 1998 by hotelier and businessman Peter Tyrie, a veteran of the luxury hotel scene.
In the 1980s Tyrie was Managing Director of the Mandarin Oriental Hotel Group, based in Hong Kong, and responsible for the flotation of the Mandarin Oriental Hotel Group in 1987. Following this he returned to the UK and founded Balmoral International Hotels in 1990.
Tyrie played a key role in developing Gleneagles Hotel in Perthshire and the Balmoral in Edinburgh to five-star standard. He was responsible for the buy out scheme from British Rail which established Gleneagles Hotels in the 1980s. At that time, the company included The Caledonian and North British Hotels in Edinburgh, Gleneagles Hotel in Perthshire and the Piccadilly Hotel in London (now the Meridian Piccadilly). Under his direction, all the properties in the portfolio were redeveloped and launched as luxury hotels.
In November 1998, Tyrie then formed The Eton Collection with the aim of creating a group of small luxury hotels. The new boutique hotel company centred on developing luxury hotels in prime city centre locations.
Emphasis is on quality and design highlighting Tyrie’s passion for reviving the unique features of old buildings with history and heritage.
